Taking a Risk – Kim Kalicki
In 2013 she was one of the best German sprinters and hurdlers in her age group. Her coach convinced her to leave it all that behind and try a completely new sport. Taking a risk paid off because she became just as successful in Bobsled.
“I started with athletics because I loved everything that included running and jumping. Even though I was pretty successful in sprint and hurdle at a young age my coach saw my potential and convinced me to give bobsleigh a try. I trusted him, left my comforte zone and took the risk to try something completly unknown. Turned out it was the best that could have happend to me. I started off as a pusher till the national coach wanted me to try out the position of the pilot. Since then I sticked to it.
I do love this sport but sometimes I struggle with being away from friends and family for a while. The summer time is more than doable but winter can be tough. I’m away with the team from october till february and only get to see my family and friends over christmas and new years eve. The lack of quality time with my peeps is rough sometimes. Nevertheless they are always supporting me, no matter what. It was my granddad who helped me out after missing the world cup cause of a foot injury. Some days I felt like giving up but his talks left me highly motivated and I got back the energy I needed to kept going. He made me believe in myself again.”
